    Justine Bateman had no prior professional acting experience when she was given the role of Mallory on Family Ties. The only reason she was at the auditions was because she accompanied her brother Jason Bateman who was auditioning for the role of Alex.

    Matthew Broderick the famous '80s actor now married to Sex and the City star Sarah Jessica Parker was originally supposed to play Alex P. Keaton on Family Ties. However he declined the role because he didn't want to leave New York. Michael J. Fox was selected for the role after his second audition.

    Meredith Baxter-Birney played the mother Elyse Keaton on the hit TV sitcom Family Ties. Her actress mother Whitney Blake also played a TV mum: Dorothy Baxter on Hazel.

    When Meredith Baxter became pregnant during the hiatus between the second and third seasons of Family Ties her pregnancy was written into the show. However she still was written out of several episodes after giving birth to twins in real life.
