Bridesmaids, 30 Rock and The Office lead the 2012 Writers Guild nominations

Happy new year everyone!  Like us, the Awards Season took a brief respite over the holiday period but it's officially back on track today with the 2012 Writers Guild nominations announced this morning in the US.  The Writers Guild Awards covers both TV and movies and there were a few surprises in this year's nods.

On the TV side 30 Rock was nominated for best comedy series (no surprise there).  It is up against Modern Family, Louie, Parks & Recreation and Curb Your Enthusiasm.  No surprise with Modern Family but it's great to see the other series, which always seem to miss out on the acting awards, finally recognised.  An episode of 30 Rock (yay!) and two episodes of The Office (double yay!!) have also been nominated.  Boardwalk Empire, Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, The Good Wife and the new series Homeland were recognised in the best TV drama category.

On the film side, Kristen Wiig picked up a nod for best original screenplay for Bridesmaids, as did Woody Allen for Midnight in Paris.  They'll be up against 50/50, Win Win and Diablo Cody's latest, Young AdultThe Descendants, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, The Help, Hugo and Moneyball are up for best adapted screenplay.

The full list of nominees, which includes categories such as best animated TV episode, can be found here.
