Strapless, strapless, strapless seemed to be the key trend, but I can think of lots elements that made their presence felt as many of us perused the Golden Globes red carpet offerings.
I caught up with leading Australian designer Peter Morrissey today and we chewed the fashion fat over the looks that rocked, worn by a major cast list of stars . . . a calibre of which we haven't quite seen for a very long time.
There were pastels (lots of nudes, beige and metallic colored dresses); there ware a few brights (Reese Witherspoon in a striking red strapless Zac Posen gown) and Sarah Michelle Gellar (in paint-splotched blue and white silk dress that even she admtted her two-year chlid had picked out for her to wear. Or, did she mean the babe painted it for her?
Both Peter and I thought what we saw from the GG's will also be reflected at the SAGs on January 30, if not in a more diluted, understated and even chicer form.
Shape-wise, while there were lots of fishtails (gallons of fabrics that protrude from the knee, or just below it, which always looks difficult to waddle around in, let alone 'work the room' without the hem getting seriously ripped.) Been there. Done that. Even at the mad ole Logie awards.
Peter said he thought there were a lot of 'same old, same old' looks: "like you have seen the dress before in past awards shows,'' he told me. "Lazy choices that are basic appropriate looks for ceremonies. They're certainly not bad, but just a tad boring and safe and not memorable.''
The men, Peter said, looked amazing: "Men all in 'black tie' for an occasion like this always looks the part and some women did not match the men they were with in their dresses!"
Peter and I talked about the points we like to 'judge' our style verdicts from: we both think your outfit should "whisper elegance - don't just shout fashion."
And you shgould choose a dress that looks like you love it so much you own it . . . and actually bought it. Borrowed, expensive fashion expresses just that : "You wear the dress; but don't let the dress wear you."
'It's not just about what you wear - it's actually more about how you wear it,'' adds peter.
The first compliment should be that people say you look beautiful before they ask about the outfit. And alabastor skin, or if you want a tiny glow, then only go "sun-kissed" and never overly tandoori tanned.
"Don't always dress to Impress, dress to express: "Wear the look to live the life" and 'dress for the occasion and live the moment",'' added Peter. Embrace the occasion and the incredible event. . . . . Wise words.
AND THE WINNER . . . and serious style supremo:
Angelina Jolie always does this to perfection and we thought she was an incredible example of red caroter A+ in her cream and red Versace gown. And red lips. And sleeked backed hair.
No matter what she is wearing - whether it be leather, Halston, Vintage, Versace , a white pants suit (in Cannes) or the $789 dress she once wore backwards to the SAGs (to show her mega cool body ink) her outfit always expresses her as a woman and where she is as that woman at that time in her life.
AJo is always appropriate. She whispers elegance, but where she stands out is because she looks like she chooses her outfit . . . and key, may even own it.
So, stay tuned for more red carpet hair, beauty and style tips as we lunge toward January 30 . . and the SAGs appear on our very own TV1 screens!
