The international film (and TV awards) season gets into full swing . . . as of now. And, you really feel like you are officially out of holiday mode . . . and back into ‘real-world’ land.
In a matter if hours, the first cab off the cinematic rank, the Golden Globes will have been done and dusted, setting the style tone for a series of awards days and nights which also includes the credible SAGs (Screen Actor Guild Awards) and, of course, the mighty Oscars.
Sure, we are all keen as foxes to find out who takes home the actual gongs - this year the competition is fierce with serious big names like George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Michelle Williams and Martin Scorsese up for the odd award or two - but really, it’s often what they choose to wear down that long ruby rug that often tends to score even more attention (and hopefully some controversy) more than anything else.
Since the power of social media has entered the citizen journalism media frenzy, all of our opinions are out there as quick as a A-lister steps out of their limo.
Is the hair right or wrong; the dress good or bad; the face classic or tragic; the ‘plus one’ a goodie or a baddie?
More than ever, the paparazzi will be wilder and more frenetic than ever, the madness of the ruby rug being snapped from every which angle possible – the good, the bad and the occasionally ugly, before being uploaded seconds later.
A few years ago, I was lucky enough to be flown over to Elton John hosted Oscars dinner and party as a guest of the Autore pearl crew and another year was invited by Australian-born and passionate make-up artist Napoleon Perdis. The breadth of both events took my breath away, and boy, I’ve seen some socially-snapping mosh-pits in my life. Both nights proved how precious the pap snaps of the world’s biggest celebs become such hot property.
The SAG’s which, of course, will be shown on TV1 on January 30, have a real credibility and integrity about them. Simply because they are voted by acting ‘peers’.
So, of if you take home a ‘SAG’ you get the feeling of having ‘made it’ within your fellow working world and spookily, that’s where so many of us want to be successful and appreciated!
As a style and pop culture journalist, I’ll be giving you a few ideas over the next few weeks on how the whole red carpet caper works. I’ll be speaking to the names who certainly know their red carpet etiquette, whether it’s fashion, beauty, hair or shoes!
So, as we lead up to SAG Monday, January 30, be part of our Style Hive . . . and you never know what you may even win along the way . . . . .
